Sania Mirza loses World No 1 ranking after 91-week reign

American Bethanie Mattek-Sands will rise to the first position in the world when the WTA doubles rankings are released on Monday.

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza will lose her number one ranking on January 9 after the Women’s Tennis Association will release its doubles ranking list in which Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the United States of America will be ranked at the first position.

For the last 91 weeks, Sania remained in the number one position in the WTA ranking.

The American tennis player Mattek-Sands succeeds in booking the top slot in the world doubles ranking after winning her twenty-third WTA doubles titles in Sydney on January 7 with her partner Sania Mirza.

Expressing the joy of being at number one in the world rankings, Mattek-Sands said,”Being at the top of  the world ranking is something you dream of from the time you get a tennis racket.”

On the other hand, Sania Mirza, who lost the first position, said, “It’s like handing over the Miss World No 1 crown. I wish her for becoming number one. She had a great year.”

Till now, Mattek-Sands has three grand slam doubles titles on her name and all are with her partner Czech Lucie Safarova — the most recent coming at last year’s U.S. Open.
