January 28 was the date which every tennis fan was waiting for as it was the final of the Australian Open between the Williams sisters. Yes, Serena and Venus. It was a match which sent all the tennis crazy chaps back to the old days when these two tennis stars competed against each other and today that time was back. And in one of the most viewed matches of tennis, younger sister Serena Williams defeated his elder sister Venus Williams by 6-4, 6-4 in the finals of the Australian Open.
After winning this match, Serena Williams has won a record-setting 23rd Grand Slam women’s singles title in the Open era, taking her seventh Australian Open crown with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over sister Venus Williams on Saturday night at Rod Laver Arena.
Serena’s 23rd title passes Steffi Graf’s 22 as the most successful women’s player in the Open era; only Margaret Court, with 24 titles across the amateur and Open eras, has more.
With this victory, Serena moves back to world No.1, deposing Angelique Kerber, who beat her in last year’s Melbourne Park decider. Serena has now won 23 of 29 major singles.
After clinching her 23rd Grand Slam title, Serena said,”There’s no way I would be at [No.23] without her. Without her, the ‘Williams Sisters’ wouldn’t exist.”
