After a lot of dilly-dally and hinting that he would not apply for team India coach, it seems ex-Team director has made an U-turn and is applying for the job. This comes after ex-coach Anil Kumble stepped down as the coach of the Indian cricket team following differences with captain Virat Kohli. There have been a lot of speculations making the rounds as to who fits the bill best as Anil Kumble has set the benchmark really high in his short stint.
In a post recently Ravi Shastri confirmed the fact by stating, “Yes, I have decided to apply for the job,” he is reported to have said after getting positive signals from Indian captain Virat Kohli and Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) member Sachin Tendulkar.
The grapevine has it that Ravi Shastri is Virat Kohli’s first choice as the coach of the Indian cricket team. He was team director from 2014-2016, which saw the ascendancy of Kohli as India skipper across formats. But he was pipped by Anil Kumble, who took over from the former recently.
If things go according to the script, one feels Shastri should bag the portfolio hands-down. Ravi Shastri is believed to have a cordial relationship with Virat Kohli which could work in his favour. But after watching so much of drama unfold in recent times, only a fool can put his money with certainty on an applicant. “Besides Shastri, Sehwag is another leading choice who has applied on the Indian captain’s insistence,” a source close to CAC told TOI.
“It’s a very tricky situation after Kumble pulled out.But the selection process would be done very transparently under the watchful eyes of CoA,” a source said as reported by TOI. It is clear that the best person will get the job even if it happens to be a foreigner, making Tom Moody a serious contender for the job. With things really coming down to the wire, the next few days could throw a few more surprises, so do not count out anything.
