Bowling a no ball is a crime for a spinner in cricketing standards and Ravindra Jadeja is guilty as charged. On Day 1 of the Nagpur Test between India and Sri Lanka, Jadeja bowled a no ball and got a wicket off the same delivery. The incident happened on the last ball of the 46th over. Karunaratne was drawn forward by Jadeja’s delivery which did not turn as expected. The ball went past the left-handed batsman’s bat and into Wriddhiman Saha’s gloves. Saha did not take much time to dislodge the bails and catch Karunaratne short of the crease.
The square leg Umpire Nigel Llong signalled to the third umpire to confirm whether Karunaratne’s foot was out of the crease or not. But the third umpire came across something else even before checking the Sri Lankan southpaw’s foot. Jadeja had crossed the crease and bowled a no ball. The celebrations from the Indian fielders soon dimmed as they were denied a wicket before the stroke of lunch break.
Karunaratne was batting on 21 from 80 deliveries, trying to anchor the innings after two quick wickets in the first session itself. The 29-year-old made the most of the second chance and went on to score his 14th half-century in Tests. He also completed 1,000 Test runs in the calendar year 2017 and became the second batsman overall to do so.
