Legendary Australian skipper Ricky Ponting is highly likely to be appointed as the head coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the 11th edition. As per reports, the franchise is in talks with the former Australian skipper and the formal confirmation is expected soon enough. With former Indian batsman Rahul Dravid stepping down from the mentor’s position, DD needed someone experienced in their strive to fetch their maiden IPL title. Though Ponting is yet to accept the offer, he was previously associated with three-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2015 and 2016 before former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene replaced him.
According to Times of India‘s top source,
We’re in talks with several people. Ponting is most likely to be signed up by the Daredevils as their next coach. However, apart from the Daredevils, he’s also being wooed by the Rajasthan Royals.
However, Hemant Dua, the CEO of DD franchise refused to comment on the matter. Recently DD’s director TA Sekar stepped down from his position. Sekar cited personal reasons for leaving the job.
DD are the only team in IPL history who have not been able to play a single final despite participating in all the seasons. With Ponting’s leadership, DD might see a few ground-breaking decisions being made ahead of IPL player auction 2018. If Ponting becomes the head coach, DD might witness a remodelling phase in their approach in IPL player auction 2018 that is scheduled to be held in February.
