The women’s singles final of Senior National Badminton Championship 2017 in Nagpur was a roller coaster ride. Saina Nehwal won the ‘battle of the queens’ as she won the match by 21-17, 27-25 in a fast-paced game. The rallies were fierce and the crowd was divided cheering for their favourite shuttler of the two. A jam-packed stadium were on the edge of their seats in the never-ending second set. Nehwal held her nerve and won the championship by beating India’s sliver-medallist in Olympics.
Sindhu made a comeback in the second set initially. At halfway mark the score was 11-8 as Sindhu found a way to outplay Nehwal. But the second set was the closest one in the game as Nehwal looked to end the match by winning straight games. The crowd got a match that they would have wished for as the scores were tied at 20-20, 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25. But Nehwal emerged victoriously at the end winning the second set by 27-25.
Nehwal dominated Sindhu in the latter half of the first set. Sindhu was spotted playing into the hands of Nehwal at times. The drift played a part in the game as well and caused a few problems for both the shuttlers initially. Nehwal was trying to attack at every opportunity and smashing the shuttle beyond Sindhu’s reach. But Sindhu made a comeback after trailing by 4 points. At the end, the third set came right down to the wire with Nehwal winning by 21-17.

Before the clash, Sindhu and Nehwal had a record of 1-1 in the finals of previous Senior National Badminton Championship. She credited her win to her new coach Pullela Gopichand as she was moving quickly in the court and was able to return Sindhu’s tough shots.
