India’s opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan on Wednesday posted an emotional video on Twitter, hours after the BCCI ruled him out of the ongoing World Cup 2019 due to a thumb injury.
In the minute-long video, Dhawan asked fans to pray for the Indian team. “Unfortunately my thumb won’t be recovering on time, I really wanted to play the World Cup and represent my country. Now it’s time for me to go back, recover well and be ready for the next action.” Dhawan said.
“I’m sure the boys are doing a great job at the moment and they are going to win the World Cup. Keep praying for us and keep supporting us,” he added.
Former cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and fans described the announcement ‘hearbreaking’ on social media.
Feel for you Shikhar. You were playing well & to be injured in the middle of such an important tournament is heartbreaking. I’m sure you’ll come back stronger than ever.
Rishabh you’ve been playing well & there can’t be a bigger platform to express yourself. Good luck! pic.twitter.com/T7qzKcDfoO— Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) June 20, 2019
Heart breaking news for @SDhawan25 . Its never easy for any player to be ruled out of a world cup due to injury. Stay strong Shikhar.

Very disheartening to know that we wont see you in the remaining games. You are a top man and one of the most integral part of the Indian team. You will be missed. Get well soon Jatt ji.

The 33-year-old cricketer was injured after being struck by a delivery from Australian pace bowler Pat Cummins, during India-Aus match, but went on to score a century. Dhawan will be replaced by wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant.
