Son of former Australian captain Steve Waugh, Austin Waugh started off his Under-19 World Cup 2018 campaign on a horrible note with the ball. Waugh Jr. looked a lot like his father, bowling medium pace in the death overs. However, he did not get the same result as expected. Austin got picked off for too many runs as he was smashed around for boundaries.
At the end of India’s innings, his bowling figures were 1 for 64 in 6 overs and his economy rate 10.67. This was the worst economy rate by an Australian bowler in Under-19 World Cups and second worst in youth ODIs.
Austin came in to bowl his first over in the 24th over of the innings. He gave away just 4 runs including a wide delivery in his first over even when Indian skipper Prithvi Shaw was going all guns blazing. However, in the next over Prithvi struck him for a boundary and Austin ended up giving 10 runs from it.
It all went downhill for him from there on. Austin gave away 13 runs in his third over and was removed from the bowling attack as half-centurion Manjot Kalra struck him for a four and six.
He was brought back into the attack in the later stages of the innings. He gave 11, 13 and 14 runs in fourth, fifth and sixth over respectively. Though he managed to get his maiden wicket in Under-19 World Cup by bowling a slower ball to Anukul Roy in the 47th over of the innings. His father applauded the effort sitting in the shades.

The legendary Steve Waugh came to Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui to watch his son feature in the Under-19 World Cup. It is too early to judge Austin on the basis of just one bowling spell and that too when the Indian batsmen got going.

India scored 328 for 7 in the first innings with the help of half-centuries from openers Prithvi Shaw (94 runs from 100 balls), Manjot Kalra (86 runs from 99 balls) and Shubham Gill (63 runs from 54 balls).
