The US Women’s Soccer Team won the 2019 Women’s World Cup for a record 4th time, defeating The Netherlands by 2-0. Captain Megan Rapinoe made the first goal of the game at the 62-minute mark in a penalty followed by midfielder Rose Lavelle.
This World Cup was also a major breakthrough for LGBTQ rights in sports as the US Women’s Soccer Team alone had 5 players participating in the tournament who identify as queer. Overall, around 38 players in the tournament from 24 countries identify as queer. This puts the Women’s World Cup in stark contrast to men’s football game, where homophobia is reportedly widespread.
The tournament also threw light on the gender pay gap in sports. Despite winning the tournament by scoring more goals than what the US men’s soccer team scored in their entire World Cup history, the US Women’s team will only receive prize money that is merely 7.5% of that of the winners of the 2018 Men’s World Cup
