It seems like it is the month of birthdays of some of the biggest cricketers to have played for India. First it was MS Dhoni, then Sourav Ganguly and now it is Sunil Gavaskar’s birthday. India has also been blessed with some of the best Test openers of all times. From the days of Sunil Gavaskar to the modern day, where Virender Sehwag is a genius. We can also say it is the month when some of the best captains to have led the country were born. Sunil Gavaskar turns 68 today.

Sunil Gavaskar played cricket in a different era and succeeded. He played in an era when helmets or the protective head gear was not available. He played without a helmet and excelled and hence his achievement is always held in high regard. His records are staggering, in 125 Tests, he amassed 10,122 runs at an average of 51.12 and that was studded with 34 centuries, the highest by any batsman then. His game was built around a near-perfect technique and enormous powers of concentration. There was an ODI, in which he played 60 overs, remained not out and scored a mere 36 runs.
