Indian captain Virat Kohli has given a brutally straightforward reply to Harbhajan Singh on recent tweet on pitches in India. Harbhajan had tweeted that if they had helpful pitches earlier in his career, he and Anil Kumble would have taken more wickets than they had. Kohli in reply said that it is bowlers personal ability also that brings wicket.
Virat Kohli said that a bowler needed to bowl well to get wickets. He said a bowler just doesn’t get spin off the pitch but he has to use his shoulders. He further said that New Zealand bowlers had equal chance at taking advantage of the pitch, which they couldn’t.
“Even if it is a turning pitch, you have to bowl well. Spin is just not something to happen only off the pitch. It depends on how many revs (revolutions) you give to the ball and the use of the shoulder. When we lost to New Zealand in the World Cup, I quite clearly remember, suddenly their spinners were quality bowlers and we were found out! I don’t see anyone talking about it now,” Kohli told IANS.
He said Indian fast bowlers have taken wickets everywhere. He said even if a players gets a cement track, he should be able to bat on and that is the mindset a player must have.
“The same (New Zealand) spinners had played (in this series). Why did not they pick up wickets? It’s as simple as that. Our fast bowlers (also) picked up wickets everywhere. Give a guy a cement track to bat on. He should have a mindset to do so. It’s as simple as that. That’s all I am going to sum up,” he added.
Kohli attributed the win to the belief players had on themselves. He said players believed in themselves more than playing conditions and or atmosphere.India put up a stellar performance against New Zealand at Indore’s Holkar Cricket Stadium. Riding on R Ashwin’s stupendous show, India wrapped up the match in just four days, defeating the Kiwis by 321 runs. Ashwin was adjudged ‘Man of the match’ and ‘Man of the series’.
After this win, India completed a 3-0 whitewash on New Zealand. They also captured the top spot, toppling Pakistan. After the match presentation, Indian captain Virat Kohli was presented with ICC championship mace. He was the second Indian after former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to get the mace. He is 10th captain in the world to receive it.
