Helicopter shot is no more a rarity, even Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman have been spotted trying to emulate the MS Dhoni-signature shot. Yes, it is Mahendra Singh Dhoni who is credited with inventing the ‘helicopter shot’. A shot that is effective in playing yorkers. It is a technique where the batsman takes a step behind to get under the ball to get the swing and elevation on the ball. MS Dhoni has used it over the years successfully at the back end of the innings when the bowler is looking to get the ball right up to the blockhole. The esteemed commentators of Star Sports unit went head to head with their colleagues with a ‘helicopter shot’ challenge.
Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Brett Lee and Dean Jones took to the challenge after the 1st ODI between India and Australia at Ranchi. Sehwag was the first to try it, he flicked it beautifully, got the middle of the bat, but the originality of MS Dhoni was missing and understandably so. The other India, Laxman was up next, he, to be honest, creamed it with a lot of elegance and poise. One feels the brutality was missing and understandably so. Dean Jones too tried it and the times it rather well but not as good and effective as Dhoni. Last on the list was Brett Lee and he was the worst but had the right brutality, but the timing was not there and understandably so.

Meanwhile, India took a 1-0 lead in the ongoing 3 T20I series. Virat Kohli’s team India won at Ranchi by a big margin of 9 wickets. With 2 more T20I’s to go, Australia with their backs to the wall have all to play for.
