Watch: After One-Year Ban, Steven Smith’s Father Dumps Son’s Cricket Kit In Garage

Steven Smith will be away from cricketing action for a while

Steven Smith’s father was right by his side when he broke down in tears while addressing the media in a conference post the ball-tampering fiasco. While the 28-year-old was answering media’s questions with remorse and a heavy heart, Peter Smith was trying to console him after he was slapped with a one-year ban from Cricket Australia.

Peter was seen taking his son’s cricket kit out of the car and then dumping it in the garage. He did not pay much heed to the media but walked away saying, “He will be fine. He will survive, he will survive.”.

After Smith’s tearful press conference, Vice-captain David Warner broke down as well while addressing the media. Despite the ban, most of the former cricketers stood by Smith as they posted messages for him on social media. Both Smith and Warner also lost their Indian Premier League (IPL) contracts. They will not be playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) respectively in IPL 2018.

However, Cricket Australia might provide a bit of a breather to the banned trio in the coming days so that they can feature in domestic cricket (Sheffield Shield). Provisions might be made to let them play County Cricket so that they continue to be active cricketers albeit not on an international level.

Smith will also not play in World Cup 2019 which is a huge blow for Australia. Also, he will be away from the captaincy for at least two years, along with Warner. Wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine has been instated the Test captain for a while but Australia will have to find an ODI skipper as well looking towards WC 2019.
