While everyone was busy with England vs South Africa ODI series and ICC Champions Trophy 2017 warm-up games we witnessed something extraordinary in English County Cricket. Hampshire leg-spinner Mason Crane got famous overnight with a delivery that will give a hard time to Shane Warne’s ‘ball of the century’. Whoever says County cricket is not fun to watch, should have a look at this delivery and the way a domestic county player stunned a renowned South African batsman, Dean Elgar.
Elgar had no clue as he was bamboozled by a beauty of a delivery from Crane. It spun from almost from the edge of the pitch to rattling the stumps. Elgar went for the pull shot but was surprised to see the lack of bounce, he could not get bat on the ball and got bowled in the process. Everyone was stumped by that ball, especially the Hampshire fielders who were in awe of what they just witnessed. Whereas Crane himself could not believe what he has done as he facepalmed himself. The fielders came in running towards him as they celebrated the 6th wicket. ALSO READ: Watch: This is what MS Dhoni wanted in his biopic from Sachin Tendulkar’s ‘Sachin- A Billion Dreams’
Elgar’s wicket was crucial as Somerset were reduced to 118 for 6 chasing a target of 259. Crane continued his assault as he ended up with a 5-wicket haul. His bowling figures read 5 for 40. His brilliant bowling performance turned the match into Hampshire’s way as they won by 90 runs.
Before we start comparing Warne’s legendary ball to dismiss English batsman Mike Gatting, let’s take a look at the once in a lifetime ball.
Well, one of the reasons Crane’s ball turned a mile and kept that much low was due to the dampness of English wickets. But, that does not mean Crane’s delivery deserves any less applause.
