Chris Gayle would not have faced such a bizarre over in his life. It happened during the Match No.16 of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2017 between Barbados Tridents and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Spinner Akeal Hossain opened the bowling for Barbados Tridents and seemed nervous bowling to the “Universe Boss” as it showed in his line and length. Hossain kept on bowling a negative line to Gayle as the ball was going down the leg side.
The first ball was called as a wide, this continued for four more balls creating a history of bowling most wides in the first over of CPL. After bowling record-five wide balls Hossain bowled one on the leg side which Gayle defended. The next three balls worked away for singles for the next three balls.
Opener Evin Lewis decided to make the most of the opportunity and hit the ball for a humongous six over long on. Lewis backed him to hit another six off the last ball of the over but this time it did not go as expected. Lewis tried to loft the ball over the leg side, but it ended up hitting the leading edge of the bat.
The ball went way up in the air only to be caught by substitute fielder Damion Jacobs who came running from the offside. Hossain finally rescued himself out of the over as he was able to get a wicket of destructive opener Lewis despite bowling 11 balls.
Here’s how the over went-
Ball 1: 0.1 – Wide
Ball 2: 0.1 – Wide
Ball 3: 0.1 – Wide
Ball 4: 0.1 – Wide
Ball 5: 0.1 – Wide
Ball 6: 0.1 – Dot ball
Ball 7: 0.2 – Single
Ball 8: 0.3 – Single
Ball 9: 0.4 – Single
Ball 10: 0.5 – SIX from Evin Lewis
Ball 11: 0.6 – Evin Lewis OUT!
Though it did not end well for Barbados Tridents as they were beaten by 17 runs (DLS method) with Gayle taking them above par score before rain played spoilsport.
