Zayn Malik might be an international heart-throb, however, before he was famous, he was just like every other teenaged kid (with singing talent though). A former member of the pop boy band One Direction, Malik was a participant in the seventh series of the singing competition The X Factor. It was on the show that he found his band members-to-be, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, and also found his incredible dancing skills.

But back when he was 17, Zayn Malik (or Zain as he was called back then) was pretty scared of dancing in front of a crowd/camera. So, when other participants were exhibiting their dancing skills, Malik was backstage hoping to avoid it. “I seriously don’t wanna do it ’cause I hate dancing and I’ve never done it before. I just feel like an idiot,” said a nervous Malik in one of the most striking episodes of the show. His absence from the stage prompted host Simon Cowell to go and personally speak to him for a pep talk.

As frankly as he could put it, Cowell told Zayn, “You can’t just bottle it.” He added, “you’re ruining this for yourself. If you can’t do it now, you’re never going to be able to do it.” Still reluctant, Malik listened to the man and braved himself onto the stage. Cue Lady Gaga’s Telephone and he started to the get in the groove. While he might have still been reserved, having never danced before, but Malik’s performance really seemed to impress everyone.
And today, it is one of those moments where you can just look back and see a star in the making.
