YouTube vlogger Lilly Singh aka Superwoman is without a doubt one of the most famous internet celebrities. From cracking hilarious jokes to empowering women across the world, she has come a long way since she hit fame. Lilly even wrote a whole book titled ‘How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life’ which is… well, exactly what it says it is. And lately, Lilly has been busy teaching a bunch of sexist trolls a few lessons.
Anyone who has been following Lilly Singh for long knows that her evolution is remarkable. She went from being an awkward teen we all found relatable to the queen she is today. Recently, Superwoman shared a photo of herself from the Amber Rose SlutWalk, where she appeared in a rather different avatar. Ditching her tees and backward hats, Lilly wore a bomb low-neckline top with khaki pants and a jacket. However, some of her followers couldn’t help but leave nasty comments on the picture.
The picture was uploaded to her Instagram a few weeks back and since then, it has attracted a lot of sexist, slut-shaming trolls.
Here are some of the comments:
Now, we know Lilly Singh is not one to just sit through the sexist crap. Remember how she once made a whole video mocking people who thought women belonged in the kitchen? Yes. In that manner, Lilly has not changed one bit and this time around as well, she shut down her trolls in one powerful post.
Here is what she wrote:
For most of my life, I didn’t expose much skin, not because I didn’t want to but because I felt guilty about it. I was taught that showing cleavage and legs is shameful and asking for judgment and trouble. As I grew up I teetered back and forth on this line between feeling sexy and feeling ashamed. Everyone had an opinion about what I wore on my body. Then I entered the entertainment industry and admittedly during shoots I often found myself feeling super confident, so I showed a little skin. But then, people assumed that I’m selling my body and resorting to sex without a choice in the matter. That’s not the case. All this to say, I’m now in a place where what I wear is simple. In fact, it only follows one rule: I wear what I feel comfortable wearing. Sometimes that’s a turtleneck and sometimes that’s a bikini. Either way, it doesn’t warrant your opinion, mistreatment or assumption. I think I look cute and if you disagree, feel free to dress differently. That’s the beauty of being different people sending you all positive vibes x #TomboyWithAFigah
Not to ignore the fact that she chose a picture that clearly does not bow down to the conventional notion that women should “dress modestly.” Like, dayum! That’s why you never mess with the Superwoman. She truly is a BAWSE.
