The Bollywood industry might have a lot of problems but fixing the kind of movies they are making needs to be at the top of their ‘Fix-It’ list. Being one of the biggest film industries in the world, it is surprising how many lousy movies are produced for every decent film that comes out. There is no denying that Bollywood has produced some masterpieces, but the stereotypes that are shown in movies need to stop NOW.
Here are some of the classic mistakes that Bollywood movies make quite often:
1. Attractiveness is paramount
Why are we still doing this? Nobody in their right mind would believe that men always turn to good-looking women when they seek love. Sex, maybe, but not love. And even if they have the lead actress playing the role of a not-so-attractive girl or a nerdy girl, she would need to get a makeover before the boy realises that he is in love with her. Why? Are only made-up, fancy women who look like they’ve just stepped out a beauty pageant worthy of being loved? Yes, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, I am looking at you.
2. A boy and a girl can never be just friends
The friendzone exists. It is very real and believe it or not, guys do the friendzoning too. But not in movies. Leave it to a Bollywood film to ruin a perfectly good friendship by making two friends fall in love. Perfect example- Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. And in the name of making things different, Bollywood often turns it into a love triangle! Cocktail, Barfi!, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, they all fall in this category.
3. Casual homophobia
If Bollywood movies could just stop with the homophobic jokes, that’d be great. They’re crass, imbecilic, and honestly not that funny to let the other two things slide.
4. If she doesn’t like you, chase after her until she does
A woman would either like a man or she wouldn’t, there is no middle ground. But as per Bollywood, every woman has a rejection threshold and if the man perseveres through it, she would accept his love and they will live happily together.
5. Airport climaxes
No, no one can just swish past security to catch their lover just in time before the “last call” for boarding as if “Meri zindagi aur maut ka sawal hai” (It’s a matter of life and death) is some sort of code to get you out of any trouble whatsoever. Get over it.
6. Every movie is a love story
If you’re wondering why most points here are about love and relationships, well, here’s why. Literally, nearly every movie, be it a thriller, a comedy, or a horror film, has a love story in it. Seriously, Bollywood, it’s not like a love story is integral to a movie plot!
7. Why is everyone so rich?!
If the producer can afford to add a mansion in the movie, they will add a freaking mansion to the movie. They will stick their characters in luxurious palaces as if it’s no big deal. Who are these characters, drug lords?! Even seemingly poor families or youngsters living in perfectly decorated homes, are way over a normal budget.
Get real, please!
