A while ago, Abhay Deol called out quite a few Bollywood actors for endorsing fairness creams. His list included names like Shah Rukh Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham among many others. But our celebrities work purely for ‘monetary purposes’ and that is completely fair but how can they ever justify doing such inane ads is the question. We are sure you have got the hint of where we are headed.
From soft drinks to talcum powders to chaddis, our movie stars are selling almost everything but unfortunately the ads they star in seem to have little sense. We all have seen Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Karishma Kapoor endorsing hair oils, fairness creams, tobacco, packaged foods, gracing our TV screens with their presence. But how many times have you wondered why a particular star has to do such a mindless commercial? Jumping off in a jeep from an aircraft to having triplicates of oneself and eating chocolates, some of the ads are totally as mind-numbing as some of their movies. Oops! Sorry for digressing.
Below are 9 commercials by popular actors which made us go WTH:
1. Katrina : Choco-on and Slice
In the Choc-On ad, there are 3 Katrinas. Who sells a chocolate like that? Wasn’t it enough that we’ve scarred with that senseless Aamsutra Slice ad? Did we need another one of the same variety.
2. Priyanka Chopra in the Garnier Light ad
The YouTube description says “Priyanka loves summer, but hates the chip-chip”, she is actually jumping around the garden and singing ‘I hate the chip chip”. Possessed much, bro?
Also, not to forget her Colgate Neem and Salt toothpaste ad here.
3. Shah Rukh Khan in Fair and Handsome ‘Kushti’ ad
As sexist and racist as it gets, “MARDON ki FAIRNESS cream”.
4. Amitabh Bachchan in Navratan Oil ad
WHO APPROVES THESE SCRIPTS?
5. Karishma Kapoor in McCain Foods
Another sexist ad in the list, why does a woman need to worry about making food all the time. Doode, your husband can also make these, or even better why don’t you order in something.
6. Salman Khan in Thumbs Up
An ad series that relies on mindless action just like his films.
Special mention, Dixcy Scott ad.
7. Ajay Devgn in Vimal Elaichi
If there was an award in the most mindless ad category, this must have been a clear winner with those bizarre hand-eye gestures.
8. Hrithik Roshan in Nirma Advance
No one doubts your dancing skills, Hrithik, this ad had more dancing than all his movies (not many though) taken together.
Phew!
9. Ranbir Kapoor in Virgin Mobile
We’d like to crib but what is even going on here?
