Delhi's Mayur Vihar joins hall of shame, bag snatcher abuses, assaults woman in broad daylight

The security situation for women in India is only going from bad to worse.

Over the last few days, we have been coming across repeated incidents of molestation and violence towards women. As soon as the year began, Bengaluru acquired a slot in the hall of shame with mass molestation of women in the presence of over 1500 policemen. Soon after, another CCTV footage showed woman being groped and pushed around by two men on a scooter while bystanders watched.

If all of this was not enough, we bring to you another incident in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar where a woman was abused and assaulted at a petrol pump in broad daylight. Delhi University professor Radhika Menon records her ordeal in her Facebook post where she says this happened when she stopped by to get her fuel tank filled. Now, since victim blaming is the country’s favourite thing to do the second news of crimes against women flow in, Menon makes a strong point when she says that even ‘boring teachers’ are not spared.

The incident took place at Vij Auto Centre owned by Bharat Petroleum, opposite to SFS flats in Mayur Vihar Phase III. Here is her Facebook post to help you get further insight into the incident:

To make things worse, after the police was called in they were curtly told by the petrol pump that CCTV cameras did not work and  footage was not available due to the absence of a hard disk. Radhika Menon ended her post with a valid concern about what women with lesser resources would go through in a similar situation if someone like her with so many friends finds herself helpless. The post which starts off with reclaiming public spaces for women also mentions how the bystanders did nothing but watch. It’s high time those responsible for the security of women get to task and do what needs to be done to prevent India from being tagged as no country for women.
