While the world still hasn’t socially accepted offbeat (or as people like to call them, ‘Mickey Mouse’ degrees) degrees like studying memes, we stand in defence of these quirky degrees. Because the alternative isn’t exactly that appealing either. Weird can be wonderful too, right? In an increasingly competitive job market where everyone is doing the same sit-in-front-of-a-computer-like-a-zombie thingy, studying something a little unusual might set you apart!
If you’re someone who wants to take an offbeat path, here are five absolutely bizarre but very interesting degrees you can try out:
Studying death:
Thanatology is the study of everything related to death: funeral rites, the process of grieving et al. Once you get the basic degree, you can pick your field of specialization which has subjects like music thanatology which teaches how to provide musical comfort to patients who are nearing the end of their lives. While you cannot get a degree out of this, you can get a four-course certificate programme to become trained in this.
Studying weed:
THC University – The Top Cannabis Training School – (no, we’re not making this up) offers a variety of courses like Marijuana 101 Certification, Trichome Budtender Certification, Horticulture Specialist Certification and Cannabis Business Certification (obviously provided you’re somewhere where weed is legal). We’re guessing you need a minimum of 420% to pass?
Studying tea-tasting:
Loving tea is a pre-requisite to qualify as a true Indian, amirite? Working as a tea connoisseur can be high paying and you can get a starting salary of about Rs 50,000 per month! Colleges that currently offer degrees in tea tasting: Birla Institute of Futuristic Studies, Dipras Institue of Professional Studies, Assam Agricultural University, Indian Institute of Plantation Management, The Tea Research Association, The Tea Tasters Academy and Indian Institute of Plantation Management Bangalore Career.
Don’t be mistaken, it’s not just tasting the tea, experts also have to give advice, help with branding and have exceptional knowledge of tea cultivation and manufacturing.
Studying puppetry:
Mumbai University has a course which teaches you the art of puppetry. Yes, this is a legit course. The Calcutta Puppet Theatre has a similar course. This part-time course teaches people about the theatrical and practical aspects of puppetry in a bid to keep the ancient art form alive. Who knows, you might just end up building your own Pinocchio!
Studying walking:
Be forewarned, this course is no cakewalk. While walking may seem like a part of your daily routine, the Centre College in Kentucky certainly disagrees. This college conducts the world’s only class dedicated to the understanding of ‘design of walking’. Here’s the fun part: assignments comprise understand the ‘intricate nuances’ of walking. Homework would be pretty cool, right?
