Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Made in India’ dream is getting a boost as the Chinese smartphone maker Gionee is setting up a manufacturing unit in India. The company that captures nearly 6 percent market share in the Indian smartphone market would set up a factory in Haryana on the outskirts of Delhi.
Gionee would be investing Rs 500 in setting up its manufacturing unit that it targets to complete in the coming two years. According to a report in the Economic Times, the company would also be launching six to seven new smartphones within the range of Rs 8,000 and Rs 25,000 to break into the top five positions of the Indian smartphone market.
The company is also planning to invest Rs 750 crore in the year 2017-18 for marketing in India.
Earlier on Tuesday, Gionee launched a new selfie smartphone in India. Gionee A1 is powered by a 2GHz octa-core processor and runs on Android v7.0 Nougat. The smartphone features 4GB RAM with 64GB internal memory that can be expanded up to 256GB via a microSD slot.
Gionee A1 features a 13MP rear camera and a powerful 16MP selfie camera. The dual SIM smartphone supports 4G LTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS for connectivity and comes with a 4,010 mAh battery. The would be available in three colour variants in India– Black, Gold, and Grey.

While the price of the smartphone is yet to be announced but it would be available for pre-booking from March 31, 2017, via Amazon India. The company had unveiled Gionee A1 alongside Gionee A1 Plus at Mobile World Congress 2017 (MWC 2017) that was held in February this year in Barcelona.
