With YouTube Indian artists mashing up covers of famous songs like never before, Vidya Vox is a name that has emerged victorious in a sea of YouTubers. Vidya Iyer, an American citizen with Indian origin, Vidya became a YouTube sensation thanks to her unique amalgamation of popular Bollywood and English pop music. Under the pseudonym Vidya Vox she is using her training in Carnatic classical music in her renditions of popular music covers. Born in Chenna, she grew up in Virginia, she wanted to pursue music ever since she was a young girl and she was mentored by many gurus throughout her musical journey, including D.K. Nagarajan, brother of the late D.K. Pattamal. In 2013, Vidya moved to Mumbai to ‘reconnect with Hindustani music’, a move that helped her discover her knack for creating mashups.
With a Psychology degree from George Washington University, Vidya began experimenting with YouTube videos. The response she received was phenomenal. She started posting Bollywood and Western pop mashups on her YouTube channel over a year ago which was the bandwagon that picked up a lot of views. The songs gained popularity quickly and she has over 200 million views and over 1.9 million subscribers and her internet-melting numbers have made Vidya Vox as a voice of the popular.
From mixing Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do with Bollywood song Hosanna to Justin Bieber’s Let Me Love You with Arijit Singh’s Ashiqui 2 song Tum Hi Ho the internet star has done it all. But of all her entourage of 32 videos on her channel, it’s her mashup Kabira from the film Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani that really got her noticed with over 30 million views.
