Kara McCullough, the new Miss USA, is a 25 year old scientist who regulates nuclear power plants

When we think of Miss India or Miss World pageant winners, we usually get an impression of a beautiful woman with hardly any academic inclinations. However, with changing times, we have all been proven wrong. Kara McCullough, a 25-year-old scientist was recently crowned the Miss USA pageant winner. A representative from the District of Columbia, this is the second time in a row that McCullough has bagged the honour at the annual competition.

Defeating 50 other worthy contestants, Kara McCullough, who works at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, really impressed the judges with her answers at the ceremony at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. McCullough was questioned on rights to healthcare to which she implicated that affordable healthcare was a privilege held by employed persons.

While her response has invited a lot of criticism on Twitter, it certainly ensured McCullough’s victory over New Jersey’s Chhavi Verg, who ended up being first runner-up.

In spite of her controversial remarks on healthcare and feminism, it is her academic background which really caught people’s eye. The African-American beauty, a radiochemist, wishes to inspire children to pursue careers in the field of science.

I love science,” McCullough said after the Sunday event. “I look at this as a great opportunity to … get to experience worldwide culture, as well as just having the opportunity to be impacted by so many children, hopefully in the math and sciences.”

Kara will now move on to represent USA at the Miss Universe 2017 pageant and it seems like she is all set to win a lot of hearts there as well.

On my way to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete for @missusa. I'm so thankful for these gracious opportunities God has provided me. If you were to ask me 5 years ago if I wanted to be Miss USA I would have blushed and replied in a sarcastic tone, "Who, me? Are you crazy? I don't think I can do that." As a adolescent I was the most timid person when it came to pursuing my dreams. And I will be the first to testify, there's never a right time to do what you love and the only person holding you back is yourself. Because of my growth and constant lifestyle to have a growth mindset, I wake up with Joy, step with so much sass, introduce myself with my shoulders back, and share my story with everyone I encounter. @missusa I'm ready and prepared for career a transition from Nuclear Regulatory Scientist to promoting women empowerment, social responsibility for our dreams and aspirations and confidence while being beautiful. "Growth and comfort do not coexist." And I'm here to continue a legacy!!!!
