Preparations for the festive occasion of Durga Puja are on and the city of Kolkata is already dazzling with vibrant colours. Ahead of the festival, Kolkatans created an ‘alpona’ or ‘rangoli’, the longest ever. Durga Puja is always celebrated with much gusto in the state of West Bengal and residents took a step further this year as they created a 1.4 km long ‘alpona’ covering the Lake Road in South Kolkata. Photos of the ‘alpona’ have since taken over the internet.
Today marks the beginning of Durga Puja, the Shubho Mahalaya, and residents of South Kolkata woke up to a bright and vibrant day when they saw that the stretch of Lake Road was covered in colours. The brilliant ‘alpona’ was created by over 400 people and everyone is absolutely in love with this vivid array of colours.
People have been sharing photos and videos of the ‘alpona’ on social media the whole day to display the spirit with which the festival is celebrated:
