The Resident Welfare Society (RWA) of Sarjapur, Bengaluru, successfully managed to save four trees from being felled down and translocated them to different positions. Reportedly, 80 trees had to be axed in order to widen the Sarjapur state highway and so, when the residents were informed about the trees being cut down, they tried to convince the officials to stop the process until they come up with a solution. Fortunately, the plan was halted and the RWA members launched a crowdfunding campaign in April to save the Sarjapur trees.
Upon receiving an overwhelming response from conservationists, environmentalists, and urban representatives who were skilled in tree transplantation, the Sarjapur RWA community managed to collect a whopping 3 lakh and shifted these four trees to a location where they would be safe. One tree was transplanted to a nearby villa some 5 km away from the original location, while the other three were sent to an international school Inventure Academy on Sarjapur road. In an interview to The Times of India, Jagadeesh K Shettar, president of SRWA, said:
“We are not against development. At the same time, we want to save trees. Experts told us that Rs 3 lakh is needed to translocate the trees. So we thought of crowdfunding. We want citizens in other localities to emulate this model to save trees while allowing civic agencies to take up development work. These may be just three trees, but they are precious to our ecosystem and we can replant them near lakes.”
