Thanks to children’s books and films, stepmothers are often viewed as cold, malicious women whose only mission is to make life hell for her step-children. Right from our first memories of fairy tales such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Cinderella, that outlook has been more or less constant. However, time and again, loving, caring women have proven this age-old notion incorrect.
Such is the case with Emily, who recently got married and took the role of a wife to Joshua Newville and a mother to his 4-year-old son. Joshua and Emily Newville are both US Marines and tied the knot a few days ago in a beautiful ceremony where the bride read a different set of vows for the groom’s son, Gage.
“I want you to be safe, and to try your hardest and to be a good person,” as Emily proceeded to read her vows for Gage, the 4-year-old broke into tears and rushed to hug her. “I know that you and I will butt heads, but I hope with all my heart that as you become a grown man you will understand my methods and realise I have only done what is best for you and that I love you.”
Emily told a local newspaper that she felt it was important to involve Gage in the ceremony since, by forging a bond with Joshua, she has also vowed to be a mother to his child.
“The last thing that I hope you learn is that you are a very special boy. You are so extremely smart, handsome and kind to others. You have helped shape me into the woman that I am today, and I may not have given you the gift of life, but life surely gave me the gift of you.“
Throughout the ceremony, Gage was quite emotional and required several hugs from both his parents. The heartwarming video is so adorable that it has gone viral globally with several people singing praises for the new mom.
