It is not difficult for any woman to understand what being catcalled in public spaces by men feels like. India, which is quite infamous for its cases of violence against women, is no alien to the concept of catcalling. In case, you are one of those who are completely oblivious to your surroundings, puzzled as to what exactly this is about, a woman from Netherlands is explaining it quite bravely. Noa Jansma decided to not let go of her catcallers without some sort of retribution and decided on a unique solution- clicking selfies with them and posting those photographs on Instagram.
As per reports, sexually harassing a woman and catcalling in Netherlands entails a heavy fine. But as is the case in most of the countries and most of the men around the world, this step doesn’t seem to have changed anything much. And the biggest example of it comes in the form of Noa’s Instagram account, ‘Dear Catcallers’, where she’s posting selfies with all her harassers, who all pose with her with a wide smile.
Noa created this account solely for shaming these street harassers and has requested everyone to join in this fight against objectification of women by asking them to post similar photos with a #dearcatcallers. Her endeavour is being praised worldwide and several other accounts such as ‘dearcatcallersitaly’, ‘dearcatcallerschicago’ and ‘dearcatcallersbelegique’ have been created because this problem is not just limited to one country.
Here’s how Noa is documenting her ‘harassment’ (as painful as it sounds, it’s even more frustrating) since August.
