At a time when the Government’s criticism can be seen as being anti-national, All India Bakchod’s fantastic attempt at ripping apart Narendra Modi’s demonetisation policy is a brave one. With witty one-liners, the short skit of seven minutes brings out the innate shortcomings of this policy and the utter idiocy of the people who are hell-bent on defending it.
The skit unabashedly brings home the fact that the move has hit the poor the most. It also hits out at people who hide behind the bravery of soldiers and stop affected people from questioning the government’s move.
Unlike most AIB videos, this is just not a funny skit. There is an amazing tragic-comic effect in it that brings out the ludicrosity of the whole circus as much as the abject trouble being faced by lakhs of people who are standing in queues outside banks and ATMs. One of the most stinging lines in the video is: “People die, my dog also died” by Tanmay Bhatt. This is a comment on the way the government has dealt with the more than 80 demonetisation-related deaths and how these deaths have failed to attract government empathy.
The skit was brave enough to directly bring Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the picture. The whole video is punctuated by radio addresses with a man saying: ‘mitron mujhe teen din dijiye,’ followed by “mujhe 30 dijiye”, followed by “mujhe 6 mahine dijiye” and finally “unhe 60 saal (You have given 60 years to Congress), mujhe bhi 60 saal dijiye”. In a stroke, it shows how the PM has been buying time from people, while the ground zero situation worsens with time.
