Why Amitabh Bachchan’s celebratory tweet on Pink turning 1 is making everyone cringe

Amitabh Bachchan, the "real star" of the movie Pink recently tweeted out a picture of the entire team of the film (obviously without the actresses though).

Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most popular figures of Bollywood. Ever since he hit the proverbial jackpot in the early 70s, Big B has been the one constant in an industry that has seen many stars rise and fall. Even in recent times, Mr Bachchan has continued to enjoy his status of a superstar and even bagged a National Film Award for his role in the 2016 movie Pink. The superhit movie starring Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, and Andrea Tariang, got people talking about gender equality. But, maybe we did not talk about it enough.

While the three actresses were praised for Pink (especially Taapsee), don’t we all know that Big B was the real star of the movie? He was the only star, after all. Recently, marking the one-year anniversary of the film, Mr Bachchan posted a tweet with a picture of the team of Pink, “all” of them. Here is the tweet:

T 2549 – The team of ‘PINK’ .. all in one frame .. and .. ALL, independent, individual .. NATIONAL AWARD WINNERS !! pic.twitter.com/uQV55nUQsO

Aaaaahh! It is such a delight seeing the ENTIRE cast of Pink together, innit? Some people did not share the feeling though.

A film on women with no woman in the frame.

Can’t see those three girls who lived independently, how they face society, how they face their morals. Pl repost with their pics too, sir

Whr is tapsee sir

What are they even talking about? And who is this Taapsee that they speak of? Clearly, if Mr Bachchan has discounted her, she must not have been of heavy influence, portraying the central character around whose struggles and resistance of the oppressive formed the basis of the movie.

On a serious note, Mr Bachchan’s tweet highlights the exact reason why movies like Pink are important for us. It is not okay to overlook a woman’s presence, her voice or her accomplishments as if they mean any less than a man’s. Irony, you okay?
