Are you addicted to watching shows and movies on Netflix? Well, the company has announced a sweet surprise for all its users across the globe, and we’re just lovin’ it.
Taking a cue from video-sharing platform YouTube, Netflix has introduced an offline feature to its app that lets you download your favourite shows and movies for viewing them offline later (this is so cool!). As of now, the selection includes Netflix’s maiden shows like Stranger Things, The Crown, Orange is The New Black and Narcos.
The new feature is included in all plans and is available for smartphones on both Android and iOS platforms. However, for this cool feature to work, you need to have a device running on al least iOS 8.0 or Android 4.4.2. Although there are no restrictions on the how long the downloaded video will be available for, you’ll have to delete the videos once you’re done watching them.
If you’re concerned about the data consumption, don’t worry coz Netflix is offering you two download qualities- Standard and Higher- to suit your data connection. While standard quality is a slightly lower video quality and requires less storage space and takes less time to download, higher quality requires more storage space and takes more time to download.
Follow these steps to download a show or a movie:
Not all show and movies are available for download. If you have a particular show/movie in mind, here’s what you can do:
1. Search for the show/movie you want to download
2. Click on the Download icon
However, if you want to browse through the downloadable titles, follow these steps:
1. Select Available for Download from the Netflix menu
2. Once you have found a title, select the title you want to download
3. On the description page, tap the Download icon
(Extra byte: for TV shows, the icon will appear next to each available episode)
If you’re accessing a slow connection, you can select the download quality. Follow these steps to select the video quality that suits your needs:
1. Tap the Menu icon in the Netflix app
2. Tap on App Settings
3. Tap Video Quality under the Downloads heading
4. Select Standard or Higher video quality
Now that you’ve downloaded your favourite show/movie, it’s time to hit the play button. To watch your downloaded movie/show, follow these steps:
1. Tap the Menu icon
2. Tap on My Downloads
3. Tap the Play icon on the title you want to watch
(Extra byte: for TV shows, you will have to select the show first and then tap the Play icon on the episode you want to watch)
Do you have ample videos in your offline playlist and you want to delete some, here’s what you can do.
To delete a downloaded title from your iOS smartphone, follow these steps:
1. Tap on the Menu icon in your Netflix app
2. Tap on My Downloads
3. Tap on Edit in the upper right corner of the screen
4. Tap on the red X icon to remove the title from your device
To delete a downloaded title from your Android smartphone, follow these steps:
1. Tap on the Menu icon
2. Tap on My Downloads
3. Tap on the Edit icon in the upper right corner of the screen
4. Tap the red X icon to remove the title from your device
