Unless you’ve been living under a rock or have just time-travelled from the past, you would know that the entire world has gone crazy about smartphone notches. They first appeared on iPhone X and now every other new phone boasts of some variation of the notch. But not Samsung.
Samsung is reportedly is developing technology that would make the notches and bezels seem ancient. According to Business Insider, Samsung is developing technology that can hide a smartphone’s various front-facing sensors underneath the display panel. Though there is no mention of whether an Under Panel Sensor (UPS) can hide a selfie camera, it can hide face detection which it plans to do through infrared sensors.
Gadget leaker Ice Universe posted an image of a Samsung presentation to corporate customers which mentioned the Under Panel Sensor:
Great news! Samsung established the direction of mobile phone design in 2019!

Though there is no mention of when Samsung’s UPS technology will be incorporated in its phones, Samsung Galaxy S10 is rumoured to come with several of the above-mentioned features including an in-display fingerprint scanner that will also be hidden underneath the display. The presentation also mentions Sound on Display technology which would produce speaker and phone call audio with vibrations from the display rather than through traditional.
Samsung Galaxy S10 is expected to be released in early 2019.
