Time has finally come that we bid adieu to one of the most unpopular and hated operating systems (OS) of the world– Windows Vista. Microsoft is finally pulling the plug on Windows Vista and we are happy that the tech space is getting rid of a piece of software that wasn’t fun, to begin with.
“Microsoft has provided support for Windows Vista for the past 10 years, but the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources towards more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences,” the company wrote in its short and fairly ‘cold’ farewell note.
Code-named project ‘Longhorn’, Windows Vista was conceived in 2001 as a step between XP and Blackcomb (Microsoft’s next big OS) and was initially slated to release in 2003. However, over time Microsoft’s developers lost a track of their vision and the company finally launched Windows Vista in 2007, nearly six years after it launched one of its most popular operating systems– Windows XP.
While Windows XP was topping the trends chart, people were also looking for a changeover. Sadly, Windows Vista not only failed the company but also the expectant customers who were eagerly waiting for Microsoft to weave magic again.
Graphically, Vista was a step up from XP as it brought the transparent windows design to the Windows computer. But on the flipside, it also brought in a number of useless features that were unnecessarily hyped by an arrogant Microsoft. Features like instant search, Windows hot start, shadow copy, parental controls and games explorer are some of the names in a long list of pointless features that Vista packed.
Luckily for us, Microsoft learnt its lessons well as it incorporated the necessary changes in Windows 7, which was released two years later in 2009.
For now, we are happy to bid adieu to Windows Vista and it’s safe to say that it won’t be missed.
