How to MUTE words and hashtags on Twitter

Will Twitter be able to curb cyber-bullying and hate-speech on its platform?

In a bid to combat the use of abusive language and bullying, micro-blogging site Twitter has rolled out anti-harassment features that are aimed at making its platform friendlier.

According to Twitter, it’s focusing on three features- controls, reporting, and enforcement.

As a part of its ‘hateful conduct policy‘, users ‘can’t promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease’.

Twitter is also training all of its support teams on its policies, including ‘special sessions on cultural and historical contextualization of hateful conduct’. “We’ve also improved our internal tools and systems in order to deal more effectively with this conduct when it’s reported to us. Our goal is a faster and more transparent process,” Twitter wrote in a blog.

However, the most noteworthy feature of the update is the expansion of ‘mute‘ feature, that enables users to hide tweets from specific accounts, to notifications.

“We’re enabling you to mute keywords, phrases, and even entire conversations you don’t want to see notifications about, rolling out to everyone in the coming days,” Twitter wrote in a blog.
