In the modern era, smartphone holds the reins to everything. From controlling your ‘smart home’ to being your travelling companion,  the smartphones these days can do just about everything. Needless to say that we need to guard our smartphones with our lives as they not the gates to our social media profiles but also to countless other details like– banking passwords, mobile-wallets, e-mail IDs and apps among others.

But what if you lost your smartphone one day? What would you do? How would you track it?

Well, there’s no need to panic as there you can use the IMEI number of your phone to track it. Here’s how

For those of you who are still new to the lexicon of mobile telephony, International Mobile Equipment Identity or the IMEI number is a code that is unique to every phone and it can be used to track the location of your phone. All you need to do is go to your nearest police station, register a FIR and give the security experts there the IMEI number of your phone. Now let the experts do their job!

In case you are wondering, here’s how you can find the IMEI number of your phone: Just type *#06# (which is something you must know before you lose your phone).

However, if you don’t want to sit ideal while the police does it job, you can take the things in your own hand and try one of these ways locate your phone:

1. Track your smartphone using Google

Google is not merely a search engine but a super powerful tool that you can use to do just about anything, including finding your phone. But it’s imperative that you first install Google ‘Find My Device’ app on your Android smartphone and give it permission to lock your device and erase its data remotely. Also, the Google Location Service and Mobile Data on your phone should be active in order for you to locate your phone.

Once these basic ingredients are in place, all you need to do is log-in to your Google account on Find My Device (also called Android Device Manager) app and click on ‘Track your device’ option. From here you can not only find the real-time location of your phone but also lock your phone and even erase the data on your phone.

2. Using anti-virus and anti-theft application 

Most mobile anti-virus applications these days provide all-around protection. They not only protect your phone from viruses and malware but also offer anti-theft and memory maintenance facilities. You can use the anti-theft option in your anti-virus app to locate your phone. Of course, you need to first activate these services on your phone and link your app to your Google account. Once active, it would not only lock your phone if someone tries to replace the SIM but also turn your camera into a spying device.
