Reliance Jio has decided to withdraw its ‘Summer Surprise offer’ following recommendations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). “Today, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has advised Jio to withdraw the three months’ complimentary benefits of Jio Summer Surprise,” Reliance said in a statement.

“Jio accepts this decision. Jio is in the process of fully complying with the regulator’s advice, and will be withdrawing the three months complimentary benefits of Jio Summer Surprise as soon as operationally feasible, over the next few days,” the company added.

What is Jio Summer Surprise offer?
Telecom operator Reliance Jio had announced its summer surprise offer on March 31, 2017. As a part of its offer, all Jio Prime members who would subscribe to a plan of Rs 303 or higher before April 15, 2017, would get three months of complimentary services free in addition to the benefits of their subscribed plan. The paid tariff would be applied in July after the complimentary services expired.

What happens now?
You have nothing to worry about if you have already subscribed to the Jio Summer Surprise offer as all the customers availed the service prior to its discontinuation would be eligible for the benefits as offered by the company.

Where did it all start?
Reliance Jio had launched a free voice and data plan in September last year and had extended it till March 31, 2017. As a part of its Welcome Offer, which was valid for 90 days starting September 5, 2016, offering unlimited data, free voice calls, video calls, SMS and video streaming to its customers. The company launched its Happy New Year Offer on December 4, 2016, offering free data, voice calls and Jio apps until March 31, 2017.

Following Jio’s launch, incumbent telecom giants including Airtel, Vodafone and Idea reported loss in revenue in the final quarter of 2016. Jio’s aggressive strategy forced the telecom giants to approach TRAI to end the brute rate war which not only affected the revenue generated by these companies but also by the government.
