What happens when two biggest arch rivals in the history of electronics join hands? You get a world class phone that is ‘better than the best’, or so to speak.
Rumours about Apple’s anniversary edition smartphone, iPhone 8, have been doing rounds on social media for a long time and the latest one is a complete shocker and would leave the tech enthusiasts around the world bewildered. The word is that the Korean electronic giant Samsung would be manufacturing 70 million OLED screens for the Cupertino company in 2017. No, not kidding!
An Apple insider told Nikkei Asian Review that the company has placed an order for bendable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels with Samsung Electronics for iPhone 8, that is likely to be unveiled in September this year. Though the company has ordered 70 million OLED panels, Samsung is gearing up to manufacture as many as 95 million screens for Apple, should the demand exceed the expectations.
The report further states that it’s also possible that Apple may decide against shipping all of these 70 million handsets to customers this year and carry it over to next year depending on the demand.
Apple is expected to launch three versions of its iPhone 8 this year. While two models– 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, will feature the conventional LCD screen that the company has used in its smartphones so far, a 5.2 inches special edition model would feature an OLED screen and would cost $1,000 more than the regular versions.

All the three iPhones would sport wireless charging feature along with waterproofing and at least one model would carry a 3D sensor for facial recognition.

But what does this mean for Samsung? Well, the company recently unveiled the latest version of its flagship smartphone– Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ and it’s highly unlikely that Apple’s advanced gizmo would have any effect on the sales of the Galaxy S8 smartphones given the time gap between the launch of the smartphones by the two organisations. As far the OLED screens are concerned, this could just be a business deal.
