When Mumbai couple Deepa Kamath and Prashin Jagger decided to get married, they opted for a wedding with a difference. They decided to go for simple, pocket-friendly and most importantly, environment-friendly wedding. From decorations to cutlery, the couple decided to use only recycled products for their wedding.
They used an LED TV cupboard box as the welcome board while ditching normal wedding invitation cards and invited guests through WhatsApp. They even arranged return gifts for guests in a form of seed balls which they sourced from a Pune-based NGO Bhavtal, urging them to plant more. To give these little goodies, they approached a local tailor brand, Just Wear Dressline, to make adorable cloth pouches.
The groom Prashin, who is a freelance photographer, spoke to Indian Express about the problems they faced. “There is a lot of misunderstanding about what exactly is eco-friendly. Vendors argued that using tissue papers was justifiable as it is bio-degradable, not understanding that to make them thousands of trees are cut and it’s made from fresh pulp,” said Prashin.
The most difficult part was convincing the vendors for not using plastic cups and glasses and asking the decorator to reuse old decorating items. “It took us many meeting to convince them about what were the things we wanted to use and they tried to coax us to give in to the ongoing practice saying ‘log kya kahenge’ (what will people say)”, said the 27-year-old bride Deepa.
Not just the couple, but their friends helped them in the arrangements as well. “Many friends made hand-made posters using old papers and things lying around in their homes, on which we explained what we had tried to do,” Jagger said.
