Pehredaar Piya Ki has been in the news for as long as people were made aware of its bizarre storyline. The show prides itself in boasting an unconventional love story, that between an 18-year-old woman and a nine-year-old boy. Aside from the obvious glorification of paedophilia and child marriage in Pehredaar Piya Ki, showmakers and even the cast continue to justify the inappropriate pairing of Diya and her “Ratan sa”.
However, even if somebody were fine with the basic plot of the series (which, appallingly, many people are) Pehredaar Piya Ki‘s portrayal of the relationship between the 18-year-old woman and her 9-year-old husband is downright shameful. Starting by showing scenes of Ratan stalking and photographing his then-future wife, the show has also featured a scene of the two celebrating their suhaag-raat (first night).
Loaded with sexual innuendos, the scene goes something like this: The groom’s sisters arrange for the newly-weds’ room for their first night together following which, they taunt and mock the bride Diya by insinuating the very obvious. “Aapki pehli raat yaadgaar rahe,” (May your first night be a memorable one) says one of Ratan’s sisters. If an adult woman hinting at her minor brother’s sex life wasn’t uncomfortable enough, the show moves on to feature a pillow-fight scene between the two which is followed the now tired newly-weds falling asleep next to each other on the bed.
Following their ‘first night’, Diya and Ratan will now be going on their honeymoon. First of all, cringe! Secondly, where do you even take a child for their honeymoon? To the water park?!
Here’s the video of the suhaag raat scene in case you’re curious as to how a show can be this outrageous:
It is shocking that the show has continued to be on air for so long despite its horrifying plot and an even worse depiction of it. It is even more tragic that the show is being celebrated as if it is a major breakthrough in what Hindi television should be.
