Amul has always been known for their short and crisp satirical cartoons on burning issues. They have not only expressed their opinion via their cartoons but also taken stands with oodles of creativity. The ‘Padmavati’ controversy has now caught their attention and true to their spirit they have made a brilliant cartoon on it.
Here is Amul’s quirky take on the controversy which got out of hand before anyone knew:

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ recently faced the wrath of people and sets of the movie were vandalised since some people were of the belief that the move distorts history. T he movie is based on a tale which was told in the Padmavat, a long Awadhi-language poem by the 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The central characters are Padmini or Padmavati (or Padumawati, as Jayasi referred to her), the queen of Chittor, her husband, Rana Ratansen Singh, and the sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khalji (also transcribed as Khilji).
If we were to put this tale in today’s contest it would qualify to be historical fiction, not completely fictional but not all factual either. It picks up real situations and characters and the rest is all based on the poet’s imagination. The controversy over Bhansali’s film reached a point where the director had to go out and clarify that there were no love scenes between the two lead characters. There is no clarification as to whether or not the characters mentioned were real either.
Amul puts it aptly in their satire with ‘Hairani Padmavati?’ followed by ‘A slice of history’. The film is still in making and one cannot be sure of what it is going to depict. The creative folks at Amul, however, have come up with their dose of satire for us just like they always do.
