Most of us Indians would agree to the fact that Indian classical dances have reached far and wide and have been a constant area of interest for those outside the country. Within the country however, youngsters do not take to our homegrown forms easily. So, when a half-Indian garners praise for Indian classical we cannot help but swell up with pride.
Trained Kathak dancer Svetlana Tulasi, along with her partner Kumar Sharma swept the judges off their feet on Russia’s Got Talent with their performance on Sultan’s ‘Jag Ghoomeya’. The Bollywood-Kathak fusion piece, which is majorly a stunning Kathak performance, makes for a treat to watch. Right from the expressions to the swift and smooth movements, the performance has won itself several fans on YouTube as well as on the show.
The performance starts around 2:50 in the clip and the judges are visibly swayed which you would know if you turn on the subtitles. Kumar Sharam, Svetlana’s partner, is also trained in the Jaipur gharana of Kathak, the same form which dominated the performance. Svetlana made it to the next round with her performance and might just go on a lot further given her talent.
Svetlana was born to a Hyderabadi father and a Russian mother, and started training in Kathak at the age of 10. With over 62k views already, the video is turning out to be quite the rage in Russia. Here’s hoping she makes Kathak a prime-time watching interest in Russia soon.
