This year an Indian-American Ananya Vinay from Fresno in California has emerged as a winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee at the event that took place on Thursday and won the cash prize of $40, 000. She won the 90th national spelling bee competition by correctly spelling the word Marocain which means dress fabric made of warp of silk or rayon and a filling of other yarns. The competition took place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention centre located in suburban Washington.
At the final round, there was a tough competition between two competitors Rohan Rajeev and Ananya Vinay Here’s some of the words which she correctly spelt to win the competition. Rohan Rajeev was asked to spell the word Egeria (a female adviser or companion) and Ananya Vinay responds with Cuivre (overblown; used as a direction in music).

Without wasting much time, Rohan spelt Bandkeramik, a word for European Neolithic pottery. Then Ananya nails Gargouillade, a word for a forward leap in ballet. There came a moment during the competition when it seemed that these two could tangle all night.
When he was asked to spell the word Konohiki, (the overseer of a Hawaiian land division) he seemed a little worried but spelt it correctly, however, without wasting any time, Ananya nailed Tasajillo. The word that took her a little more time to spell was Konditorei, a shop selling confectionery but after asking few questions she nailed it too. Another tough word that came her way was Heiligenschein, a bright light around shadow of person’s head but without taking much time she spelt it correctly.

In no time she quickly spelt the word Sceloporus, any of a genus of small iguanid lizards. The second last word that she nailed before winning the competition was Gifblaar!
After correctly spelling many difficult words, Rohan misspelt the word Marram and a look of worry immediately crossed his face. Ananya Vinay then stepped up to the mic and correctly spelt the word: M-A-R-O-C-A-I-N.
