'Huge' explosion near Damascus Airport likely by Israeli air raid

Initial indications were that the blast had caused only material damage and not deaths

A massive explosion hit near the Damascus International Airport in the early hours of Thursday, a monitoring group said, without specifying the cause. “The blast was huge and could be heard in Damascus,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The blast took place near the fuel tanks and warehouses near the Syrian airport. As per the initial reports, the blast had caused only material damage and not deaths.

A pro-Hezbollah al-Manar television channel said that the explosion had likely been caused by an Israeli air strike. Hezbollah, an ally of President Bashar al-Assad, is involved in the fighting in Syria’s civil war.
