In a first, this Australian MP breastfeeds her child while moving a motion in Parliament

Larissa Waters, an Australian MP has scripted a history second time in a month. In May, she became the first woman to breastfeed in the parliament

An Australian MP creates history as she breastfeeds her baby while passing a resolution in the Parliament and by doing this she has become the first woman ever to do so.  The image is surely going to be considered as one of the iconic photos. Larissa Waters, who is a Greens MP was speaking about the black lung disease, which mostly affects coal miners while feeding her 14-week-old baby, Alia Joy.Her decision to speak while breastfeeding was appreciated by the other members.

After scripting history, Larissa Waters took to Twitter and wrote “First time I’ve had to move a Senate motion while breastfeeding! And my partner in crime moved her own motion just before mine, bless her.”

She has achieved the second feat in a month’s time. In May, she had become the first woman to breastfeed in the parliament. She returned to the upper house Senate on May 9 ten weeks after giving birth to the second child.

In May, Larissa Waters on the social media site wrote. “I am so proud that my daughter Alia is the first baby to be breastfed in the Federal Parliament”.

“We need more women and parents in Parliament. And we need more family-friendly and flexible workplaces, and affordable childcare, for everyone, ” she said.

Since last year, parliamentary regulations were removed and more ” family friendly” rules came to force, therefore allowing mothers to breastfeed in the chamber. In 2009, Sarah Hanson-Young, who was also a Greens MP, was asked to remove her baby from the chamber. Senate President John Hogg did not allow her baby to enter the chamber stating that Parliament was a place for serious business. She later called the incident “humiliating”.
