Sri Lanka and Ceylon tea hosted – ‘The Global Ceylon Tea Party’ at Sri Lankan diplomatic entities in 37 countries, while partner tea companies, cafes and homes across the globe hosted similar parties. Locations in up to 50 countries with a population in excess of half the number of people in the world were targeted to celebrate this unprecedented event that is believed to have set a world record for the largest and longest global tea party.
Starting in the pacific and ending on the west coast of the Americas, the parties commenced at 17.00 hrs GMT in each time zone and spread from east to west. This global chain resulted in 24 hours of cumulative celebrations for Ceylon tea in all corners of the world.
Within Sri Lanka at least 100 parties were reportedly held across the country.
To global tea party was organised to mark the 150 years of Ceylon Tea, Sri Lanka’s national brand for its tea industry. Pakistan also took part in the event. “The Global Ceylon Tea Party starting in the Pacific and ending on the West coast of the Americas,” the Sri Lankan High Commissioner Maj. Gen. (Retired) Jayanath CP Lokuketagodage said while inaugurating the ceremony, according to an Express Tribune report.

Notably, the event had been orchestrated in such a manner that it was held at the near universal evening tea time of 5 pm where ever the event was being held over a 2-hour period.
The Express Tribune report suggested that Sri Lankan tea industry along with the Colombo Tea Traders Association (CTTA) and the Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) had decided to celebrate the 150 years of Ceylon tea
with style.
Different types of Ceylon tea were also placed during the event for the public to taste, take in its aroma and see the different colours they have.
