Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai becomes the youngest person to receive honorary Canadian citizenship. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday presented her a certificate of citizenship in Ottawa, Canada. She is the sixth person to receive the honorary Canadian citizenship.
After receiving the citizenship, Malala said, “I’m humbled to accept honorary citizenship of your country.” She received standing ovation in the House of Commons. “While I will always be a proud Pashtun and a proud citizen of Pakistan, I’m grateful to be an honorary member of your nation of heroes,” she said.
At 17, she became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel peace prize in the year 2014. Yousafzai was also conferred with highest honour which is awarded by United Nations, a UN Messenger of Peace. She was given the award for working towards girls’right to education worldwide.
After giving honorary Canadian citizenship, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “Malala, your story is an inspiration to us all.”
“For bravely lending your voice to so many, we thank you. From this day forward, we are all proud to call you Canadian,” added Prime Minister Trudeau.
She got noticed globally after Taliban gunman shot her in the head on a school bus on October in the year 2012 in Pakistan as she was defending girls right to attend school.
In the year 2014, she was suppose to receive her Canadian citizenship but on the day when she was given the citizenship, Canadian Parliament was attacked by an armed terrorist.
We have to make sure all children get to go to school. Great to speak with Malala about how we can work together to achieve gender equality. pic.twitter.com/dwLAwxI5LV
