#MuchCool: Punjab-Born Sikh Man Will Be The First Turbaned Officer In US President’s Security Team

Punjab-born Anshdeep Singh Bhatia has become the first turbaned Sikh to join the security detail of US President Donald Trump. Born in Ludhiana, he was inducted into the security team force last week after the completion of his training in the United States.

When Anshdeep decided to join as one of the officers in the President’s security detail, he was asked to change his ‘looks’ (read do away with the turban). But Anshdeep chose to fight for his rights and so moved the court where eventually the decision came out in his favour, as reported in the Hindustan Times.

Anshdeep Singh Bhatia has become the first Sikh to become part of the US Presidential security detail. After he was told he “had to change his looks” in order to join, he went to court and apparently secured an accommodation. #WednesdayMotivation #WednesdayWisdom #Sikh #turban pic.twitter.com/vmi64Spx7G

Originally from Kanpur, Anshdeep’s family moved to Ludhiana during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. And in 2000, when Anshdeep was 10 years old, his father Devendra Singh shifted to the US with his family.

In December 2017, Indian-American civil servant Preet Didbal became the first woman Sikh mayor of Yuba city in California. Also in December 2017, Ravi Bhalla, another Sikh was elected earlier this month as mayor in Hoboken, New Jersey.
