A Muslim man who says Little Caesars served him a pizza with pepperoni made with pork has filed a lawsuit seeking $100 million. The Detroit Free Press reports the lawsuit filed on Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court says the pizza sold in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn was labeled “halal,” meaning it shouldn’t contain pork and would be prepared in a way that follows Islamic law.
A Little Caesars statement says the chain “cherishes our customers from all religions and cultures” and believes the lawsuit is “without merit.”
The lawsuit seeks class-action status. It says Mohamad Bazzi twice ordered “halal” pizza containing pork.
His attorney, Majed Moughni, says the lawsuit aims to deter others from accidentally ordering food containing pork from the restaurant. Dearborn has a large Muslim population.
According to a Dailymail report, Bazzi’s lawsuit has also stated that this was not for the first time when such incident happened. The report suggests thatthe first incident happened on March 20. Bazzi and his wife were halfway through eating the pizza when they realized it was not halal, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Bazzi claims he knew the pepperoni was pork because he used to work in a pizza shop and knows the difference.
He also said his wife was a Catholic who converted to Islam and could taste that it was pork.
They filed a police report three days later, according to the lawsuit. The second incident left them irked and prompted them to file a lawsuit the following day.
The lawsuit seeks class-action status, alleges breach of contract on Little Caesars’ part, negligent misrepresentation, unjust enrichment and fraud.
