In a move that is likely to warm-up ties between the two countries, US president Donald Trump has agreed to honour Beijing’s One China Policy.
Trump, in his first phone call to Chinese president Xi Jingping after he assumed charge as president of United States, said that he would respect the ‘One China Policy’ , the White House said in a statement.
” The two leaders also extended invitations to meet in their respective countries,” it added.
Washington and Beijing’s ties were on a downward spiral after the former allowed Taiwan’s leader to meet a republican senator and governor of Texas.
Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s president, met with senator Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, as she stopped off in the US on a trip to Central America on Sunday.
Trump’s call to Jingping on Thursday evening Washington time — came as US was preparing to welcome Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, to the White House on Friday.
In a swift response, Mr. Xi embraced the announcement on the highly sensitive issue which had cast a pall over relations after Mr. Trump suggested it was up for negotiation.
“Xi Jinping appreciates Trump’s emphasis on the American government’s commitment to the One China policy and pointed out that the One China principle is the political foundation of US-China relations,” official broadcaster CCTV reported.
